Setting the Mood for Success in 2021
Most of us could not wait for 2020 to be over!!! Last year was full of challenges to our businesses, our personal lives, our physical health, and our futures. Instantly we had to adjust to homeschooling, online shopping for everything, working from home, and living with an uncertain future.
We are missing simple things like getting a smile from a stranger after holding the door open for them, hugging our friends, and grocery shopping without having to mask up and feel like we are putting our lives at risk for a bag of fresh produce!!!
There have been some positives in all this. We have gained a few hours in our days by not commuting to work. Most of us have become better cooks. More of us are growing our vegetables. Dog adoptions have soared since the pandemic began. We are spending more quality time with our families, even if it is on Zoom.
We woke up on Jan 1st to a New Year, but it feels very much like a continuation of 2020
So how can we make 2021 a better year? How can You be a better YOU this year?

Here are some ideas to choose from to set the mood for a successful day.
Commit to a Morning practice
- Writing-In the book “The Artist’s Way," Julia Cameron suggests we write three pages every morning. Just put pen to paper, don’t think. Start writing. This healing exercise opens creativity, clarify your concerns. Solutions to problems will pop up on the pages. Free up your mind and energy for a more productive day.
- Mediation -is a great way to start the day. It brings clarity and peace of mind. Start simply by sitting in the stillness and breathing. There are endless suggestions online about how to meditate.
Create a mini alter in a space where you will be undisturbed. Light a natural scented candle like Orange Blossom or French Lilac to upgrade your mood. Do not overcomplicate it. Meditation resets the neurological systems and brings relaxation and greater clarity.

Organize Your Home and Office Space
Marie Kondo, one of the more famous home organizers, speaks about surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy and eliminating the things that no longer make you happy. When our space is cluttered and disorganized, it impacts our thinking and our effectiveness. Clutter is a mental distraction. Sometimes it's not even clutter, its functionality. Every few months, look at your environment and ask yourself..".is this still working for me? "
Maybe you recently started working from home or launched an online business. We are so busy just getting our daily to-do list done. Now is the time to stop and ask, “ Have I set up my physical space for success?” Does working in this space feel inspiring, make me productive, and bring me joy?
- Is it functional?
- Is it peaceful?
- Do I have the right furnishings?
- Is it ergonomic?
- How is the lighting, the airflow?
- Do I feel grounded or distracted in this space?

Update your workspace. Simple things like adding a computer stand for your laptop, a new chair, or improved lighting will prevent the aches and pains, eye strain, and stress that distracts you from doing your best. Something as simple as changing the light bulbs to soft daylight can change your life. Bring in some nature with a few plants or photos of your favorite nature destination. Light a natural candle with an energizing scent.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath…. What do your smell? last night’s leftovers?
Now close your eyes and think about a smell that brings back a pleasant memory.
For me, it’s always the smell of the ocean that reminds me of the joys of summer, combined with the intoxicating aroma of the lilac tree outside my childhood bedroom window.
